Information About Soldeu
Soldeu is a popular resort which sits at 1710 metres, along the main road from Andorra la Vella towards France. The resort attracts many British, French and Spanish tourists with a good mix of families, couples and groups of all ages. Soldeu has a very relaxed, friendly atmosphere and a great après ski scene. The village still retains some of its traditional charm with old fashioned rural inns (known locally as bordas) and large converted farmhouses. There is a good selection of quality bars (click here for more information about bars in Soldeu) and a couple of small nightclubs which keep the resort lively until the early hours. Soldeu is also home to a varied selection of restaurants offering traditional local dishes, influences from France and Spain, as well as Indian, British and Mexican cuisine (click here for more information about restaurants in Soldeu).
The main activities in the resort are of course skiing and snowboarding, it is said that the first skier in the valley was a Soldeu postman who in 1924 decided to swap his snowshoes for a pair of wooden skis in order to make his round a little easier during the winter months. The Soldeu - El Tarter sector was first formed in 1964 by three Andorran families and was home to just one chair lift, a ski lift and a bar - restaurant accessed only from Soldeu. During the 1981-82 season the Riba Escorxada sector was developed providing access from the neighbouring resort of El Tarter. The area has rapidly developed over the years, with the most notable recent development being the link up of Soldeu - El Tarter with the neighbouring resorts of Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig, Canillo and Encamp during the 2003-04 season to create the impressive Grandvalira ski area. Grandvalira now offers 193km of piste, forming the largest skiable domain in the Pyrenees, with a very modern and efficient lift system to transport skiers around the large variety of slopes it has to offer.
The resorts of Grandvalira Soldeu and El Tarter are particularly recommended for beginners and aspiring intermediates due to a large selection of wide, gently sloping runs and a superb English speaking ski school. However there is still plenty to offer competent skiers and snowboarders looking for more of a challenge including the FIS slope "Avet" where you can test your skills on the same run used by the best European skiers which will host the European cup, in addition Grandvalira offers a further 21 black runs and 32 reds, as well as some challenging mogul runs. For adventure seekers there are a few freestyle parks in the Grandvalira area, the biggest of which is located in Grandvalira El Tarter with some challenging jumps, a big air bag, half pipe and a selection of rails. Grandvalira Soldeu and El Tarter have their fair share of picturesque tree lined runs and some superb mountain restaurants to choose from.
Soldeu has many other activities on offer including snowmobiling, ice driving, helicopter flights, paragliding and the excellent Sport Wellness Spa located next to the 5* Sport Hermitage Hotel. There is a small selection of shops in the village; however the best shopping is to be found in the capital Andorra la Vella, located approx half an hour away by car or bus.
Information About El Tarter
Just 1.5 kilometres down the hill from Soldeu you will find the neighbouring resort of El Tarter, which is much quieter and more suited to families and couples looking for a relaxing holiday with good access to the slopes. The village of El Tarter has a handful of bars and restaurants and a small supermarket. There is a ten seater cable car linking the village to the slopes, or a four seater chair lift also from the village for those wishing to get straight into the action. El Tarter has its own English speaking ski school, plus a nursery and snow garden for younger children. Away from the slopes you will find a wellness centre and bowling alley, both located in the Hotel Nordic and other activities such as dog sledding on offer. For a bit more action after dark you may want to make the short trip up the hill into Soldeu.
Information About Andorra
Andorra is a tiny country nestled on the border between France and Spain. Its official name is the Principality of Andorra (Catalan: Principat d'Andorra). There are seven parishes in Andorra, of which the parish of Canillo is where Soldeu sits. The official language is Catalan, however French is widely spoken in Soldeu, and English is usually understood. Andorra does not have its own currency therefore it uses the Euro.
Andorra-resorts.com
We have worked in Andorra for the last five years, setting up Arinsal.co.uk in 2007. Following a successful first season we launched Pasdelacasa-andorra.com followed by Soldeu-andorra.com shortly afterwards, where we offer the same kind of information but specific to each resort. Take a look at the other sites to find out more about Andorra, and let your friends know about us so they can save money too!
We provide this independent website free of charge to offer an honest insight into the resort and the mountain, so if you're new to Soldeu, or if you're a regular visitor, you will hopefully find our website useful and come back regularly to catch up with the latest information, news and gossip from the slopes!
Don't forget, tell all your friends about Soldeu-andorra.com, so they too can find out about the resorts of Soldeu and El Tarter and save money on their ski rental & snowboard rental at discount prices!
